The target changes because its history changes
Forgery does not directly replace an object's properties. It builds a model of what it might have been if different choices, accidents or training had occurred, then applies that model as a temporary condition.

Research is part of the mechanism
The stamp must describe a convincing chain of causes: material, use, context and accumulated changes. The better the target is known and the more coherent the proposed sequence, the more likely the effect is to hold.
Effect persistence
Stability depends on plausibility
A stamp can last a long time when the alternative history fits the target. Gaps or contradictions make the effect degrade and the object gradually return to its original state.
Operating limits
Complexity meets resistance in invested matter
Objects with their own energetic charge are harder to modify. Distance from the connected region also reduces effectiveness, while universal stamps are fast but much less durable.
