The Taldain system

Power under two skies.

Taldain's central mystery is shaped by its two-sided world: Dayside's sand mastery is more visible, while Darkside's starmarks remain deliberately less understood.

01

Sand mastery

Sand masters manipulate white sand telekinetically. The sand turns black temporarily, and the practice consumes the user's water, making power inseparable from the world's harsh climate.

02

Starmarks

Starmarks are the strange signs associated with Darkside and its Starcarved. Their connection to sand mastery is part of the wider mystery, so this page keeps the explanation spoiler-light.

03

Dayside and Darkside

The two sides of Taldain have different light, cultures and ways of understanding power. That division drives the story's politics and its sense of discovery.

A few grains of context

Details to keep in mind

  • White Sand is based on a prose story that was reworked into the canonical graphic novel trilogy.
  • Khriss connects White Sand to the wider Cosmere as both a character and a scholar of worlds and Investiture.
  • The opening excerpt in Arcanum Unbounded lets readers sample the story in prose, while the trilogy tells it in graphic-novel form.
